Shaun & Lauren's story: Our journey as a family with acquired disability

Meet Shaun and Lauren, who have been together for 12 years and have two little kids. As they’ve said, they’ve been on a big journey and NNA Direct Support Service is proud to have been able to be part of that journey. When Shaun acquired a disability in 2020, Shaun and Lauren were in the dark on what to do. They knew they needed help and that’s where we stepped in… the rest is history

The year 2020 was a chaotic year for the entire world. But for our family, life took us on one big crazy journey. This journey started in October 2020. While navigating through the new COVID era, Shaun suffered multiple strokes. This left him blind, with right arm paralysis and some aphasia, which is a communication disorder.

After these strokes, the hospital became our home for the next 5 months. At the time, our kids were only four and a half and three, so as you can imagine there was a lot to juggle. When we were allowed to go home, we really had no idea of what the whole process was, but we were recommended to NNA Direct Support Service through Support Workers we’d met at the hospital. So, we said, what the heck, we’re going to need as much help as we can.

“But we made that choice to go with NNA Direct Support Service and we haven’t looked back!”

To be honest, we would not have survived without our NNA Direct Support Service Support Workers, especially with having kids, who are now nearly six and four years old. Our Support Workers help with everything, and it makes such a massive difference in our lives.

We have a great team who support us five days a week. The minute our Support Workers get to the house, they help Shaun with his medication, showering, breakfast, and when we have two kids to get out the door for daycare, having someone here you can reply on is so important. Both our Support Workers also have children, so they can somewhat appreciate where we’re at in this point of our lives.

“We’ve had the same two carers the entire time. They are just amazing; they’ve become like family. We’ve been really blessed.”

It’s not just everyday household activities either, our Support Workers take Shaun out to participate in the community. Some days he goes to swimming lessons or day drives, just normal day activities which is great. It’s so good that Shaun can have some normality in each day and that’s been a huge part of what NNA Direct Support Service has provided us.

The support we get means everything. Life can get hectic, it’s such a weight lifted off us knowing that our Support Workers are coming in the morning and that Shaun is well looked after. We definitely could not manage it all on our own. Life is so much less stressful with NNA Direct Support Service.

We really were in the dark going into all of this back in 2020 and we had no idea what to expect from a disability support service. But NNA Direct Support Service has gone above and beyond anything we could have imagined. It’s never been a ‘come in and do your job’ service, it is so much more than that. Like we said, our Support Workers have become part of our family.

If you are someone considering NNA Direct Support Service, we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them. They are “simply the best.”

It was great getting together with Shaun and Lauren to hear more about their story and how they found us in 2020. We are delighted to hear how close they have become with their Support Workers and that we have been able to support them during this part of their life journey. Finding the right support can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. If you are needing in-home disability or nursing supports, speak with our team today.

Recently, we caught up with Joseph Semaan who we previously introduced to you as our Customer Engagement Manager. But we wanted to reintroduce you to him and his new role at NNA Direct Support Service. Joseph is now our Business Development Consultant based in Western Sydney and has been with us since November 2021. He has over 5 years of experience in the disability sector and has been great to have on the team. What do you see as the biggest opportunity for disability support providers? To reach more participants and assist them to live more independently and improve their well-being and quality of life. Biggest challenge for the disability support sector? Firstly, the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) not responding quick enough to plan reviews, impacting participants care. Also, the risk of organisations not meeting professional standards to provide model care to participants. What are some fun facts about you? I have a Diploma in Remedial Massage and ran a business for over 12 years. What are you most excited about for in 2023? Professionally, I am excited to continue to expand the business and help as many people as possible. Personally, watching my daughter grow and celebrate her 1 st birthday. If you or someone you know is looking for support in Sydney, please get in touch with Joseph on LinkedIn here .
