Know more about Fragile X in time for Awareness Day

While Fragile X Awareness Day is marked on 22 July (today) to spread information on this inherited genetic condition, Fragile X is a year-round experience for those affected by it.

What is Fragile X?

Fragile X-associated Disorders are a family of inherited conditions caused by alterations (expansions) in the FMR1 gene (Fragile X gene) which is located on the X chromosome. These disorders include a wide range of physical, intellectual and behavioural symptoms that can affect family members in different ways.

It is estimated that about 90,000 people in Australia are impacted by Fragile X in some way – as carriers of Fragile X, or with Fragile X syndrome.

Treatments for Fragile X?

While there is no cure for Fragile X syndrome at the time being, there is a range of treatment interventions and management strategies that help people manage.

An integrated approach of occupational, physical, special education, psychological, and speech therapies can be incorporated into the daily routines of people with Fragile X.

Anxiety, ADHD, obsessive-compulsive behaviour and mood instability can be managed with medications recommended by a doctor.

Support for families?

Support can be found with the Fragile X Association of Australia for families and people across Australia who are affected by Fragile X Syndrome. A family support counsellor is also available to connect with people over zoom, phone or face to face when suitable.

Recently, we caught up with Joseph Semaan who we previously introduced to you as our Customer Engagement Manager. But we wanted to reintroduce you to him and his new role at NNA Direct Support Service. Joseph is now our Business Development Consultant based in Western Sydney and has been with us since November 2021. He has over 5 years of experience in the disability sector and has been great to have on the team. What do you see as the biggest opportunity for disability support providers? To reach more participants and assist them to live more independently and improve their well-being and quality of life. Biggest challenge for the disability support sector? Firstly, the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) not responding quick enough to plan reviews, impacting participants care. Also, the risk of organisations not meeting professional standards to provide model care to participants. What are some fun facts about you? I have a Diploma in Remedial Massage and ran a business for over 12 years. What are you most excited about for in 2023? Professionally, I am excited to continue to expand the business and help as many people as possible. Personally, watching my daughter grow and celebrate her 1 st birthday. If you or someone you know is looking for support in Sydney, please get in touch with Joseph on LinkedIn here .
